- Câu trực tiếp (Direct Speech) là chính xác lời của ai đó. Chúng ta thường dùng dấu “ ” để trích dẫn lời nói trực tiếp. - Câu tường thuật (hay còn gọi là câu gián tiếp) là câu thuật lại lời nói trực tiếp do một người khác phát biểu. | - They said, “We will visit her”. (Direct Speech) →They said (that) they would visit her. (Reported Speech/ Indirect Speech) |

III. CÁC QUY TẮC CHUYỂN ĐỔI CÂU HỎI TRỰC TIẾP SANG CÂU HỎI GIÁN TIẾP
- Động từ tường thuật được sử dụng trong câu hỏi gián tiếp thường là: asked, required, wondered, wanted to know,...
- Áp dụng quy tắc đổi đại từ nhân xưng, tính từ sở hữu, đại từ sở hữu giống câu trần thuật gián tiếp.
- Áp dụng quy tắc đổi thì của động từ giống câu trần thuật gián tiếp.
- Áp dụng quy tắc đổi các trạng từ chỉ thời gian, nơi chốn giống câu trần thuật gián tiếp.
- CÂU NGHI VẤN:Từ nối để nối mệnh đề phụ là if hoặc whether
- Đối với câu có từ để hỏi "what, why,v..v... thì dùng lại các từ đó.
- Dạng câu hỏi chuyển thành câu trần thuật do đó KO dùng các trợ động từ: do, did, does trong câu hỏi gián tiếp.
- Câu hỏi chuyển sang câu gián tiếp phải được chuyển về dạng khẳng định và lược bỏ dấu hỏi chấm.

IV. CÂU CẦU KHIẾN GIÁN TIẾP
Quy tắc:
1. Mệnh đề chính để giới thiệu phải dung những động từ như order, command, tell, ask, request... + O (tân ngữ) chỉ người được lệnh hay yêu cầu.
2. Động từ trong nguyên văn ở mức mệnh lệnh phải đổi sang dạng "to +V". Nếu mệnh đề phủ định "not to +Vo".
